Thank you for agreeing to join our select group of participants. Nielsen Scarborough is now a Nielsen service and has been in business for more than 40 years. Nielsen Scarborough conducts more than 210,000 surveys a year throughout the United States in more than one hundred metropolitan areas like yours. Your participation helps us create our consumer insight solutions.
We take our participants’ privacy very seriously. We have created this Notice to help answer questions you may have about how we protect and use the information you provide. Please note that this Notice applies only to Nielsen Scarborough research studies or surveys available through http://www.scarborough.com/, http://www.scarboroughsurveys.com, www.NielsenLocalSurveys.com, www.mycitysurvey.com, www.mylocalsurvey.com, and http://www.mivaliosaopinion.com (“the Sites” or “our Sites”) and no other surveys, studies, or online services provided by Nielsen or its affiliates.

We protect the identities of our participants. We will NOT use your personal identifying information to advertise, promote, or market goods or services directly to you and we do not allow our clients to market directly to you.
“Personal identifying information” means information– like your first and last name, home postal address or personal email address – that by itself, or in combination with other information, could identify a specific individual.
Information you give us. As part of a research study or survey (“study”), you may provide us with information about you and others in your household, such as your name, mailing address, home or mobile telephone number, and email address. You may also provide us with demographic information such as gender, birthdate, age, marital status, occupation, and annual household income. Through participation in our studies, we collect your behavior and preference data. “Behavior data” is a record of when, why, or how you do things, such as how frequently you shop. “Preference data” is a record of the choices you make, such as which products you like. These studies help us better understand consumer behavior, use, and trends. Your participation is always voluntary.
Information from your use of our Sites, software, or the Internet. If you participate in a study that involves online, Internet or mobile device activity information, we may collect information about your activity on such devices, either directly or automatically through the use of software, cookies, web beacons, or other technology. We may also automatically receive information when you visit our Sites or on the Internet, or use our software. This includes technical information about your device, system and network, such as your Internet Protocol (IP) address, the type of browser you are using, the date and time of your visit, the web page you visited immediately prior to visiting this Sites, and other data involving your use of our websites. Cookies, pixel tags, web beacons, clear GIFs or other similar technologies may be used in connection with the Sites. Please see Section F on Cookies below for more information.
If you download our application software onto your mobile device, we will receive data through the application, such as when you voluntarily provide us with access to the location of your device and activate hardware functions like your camera.
Information we get from other sources. We may receive additional information about you from other sources, including other Nielsen measurement products. This may include information such as what you watch or buy, and your exposure to advertising. We obtain this information from many sources, including outside sources. These include, for example:
- census data,
- the manufacturers and sellers of the products you purchase or use,
- "loyalty" programs (like those that offer rewards and points),
- organizations that collect online data,
- data suppliers,
- companies that combine purchase information, and
- other entities that have a legal right to provide such information to us.
We may combine the information you provide with these additional data. We will use it only for the purposes described in this Notice. By participating in studies, you agree that we may obtain this information about you and combine it in this way.
We use the information we collect to create a variety of research insights for our clients. We use tools and methods to make sure that there is no reasonable possibility of identifying an individual participant in the reports that we create for our clients. For example, we combine the responses we collect from you with the responses of others to produce “aggregated” reports. We also create scientific reports based upon modeled information. “Modeled information” is data we have developed based upon demographic and behavioral characteristics (like your gender, age, and purchasing habits) to predict what people with similar or matching characteristics would buy. This allows advertisers to identify the likely audience for a marketing campaign.
Our research insights help our clients make choices about where and how they advertise, including on print, broadcast television, radio, online and mobile. Among other things, our solutions have helped clients:
- Identify the demographics of tablet owners or those who plan to buy one in the next 12 months.
- Determine the types of programs watched using Video on Demand in the last month.
- Discover type of food products used at home in the last week by county.
- Time spent on the Internet in a week and types of activities engaged online.
- Understand the media and purchasing habits of different types of potential voters.
We may use the information you give us to contact you. When we contact you – by phone, email, text, or postal mail – we will usually do so for one of the following reasons:
- to respond to your inquiries;
- to validate your answers;
- to update our records to ensure your information is correct;
- to ensure that the equipment is working properly;
- to send you information regarding your participation such as how to redeem rewards;
- to provide notice regarding changes to our terms, conditions, and policies; or
- to offer you expanded research opportunities through surveys or studies.
For instance, if our service will be temporarily suspended for maintenance, we might send you an email. Generally, you may not opt out of these communications, which are not promotional in nature. From time to time, we may send you invitations participate in other studies. By participating in our study you agree that we may call you, and for efficiency and accuracy, that we may use an automatic telephone dialing system or prerecorded voice. You also agree to receive “push” notifications through our software and to be contacted as described above.
- We may also use the information for business purposes, such as data analysis, performing data, methodological and software audits, developing new products, enhancing our Sites, improving our products and services, identifying usage trends and determining the effectiveness of our communications.
If we combine non-personal information with personal identifying information, the combined information will be treated by us as personal identifying information as long as it is combined.
We work with third parties who provide services for us such as website or application hosting, data analysis, infrastructure provision, IT services, customer service, email delivery services, quality control, validation, auditing services, reward, incentive, sweepstakes, and other similar services.
We work with other companies for the purposes of data processing or market research product development purposes. These companies are contractually required to keep this information confidential and are not permitted to use this information for any other purpose except to carry out the services that they are performing for us. In accordance with market research guidelines, we may also provide individual level information to other companies. If we do, they are bound to keep the information confidential and use it only for research or statistical purposes.
We may disclose information you provide to other members of the Nielsen family of companies for the purposes described in this Notice.
We will provide information you provide to a third party if the law requires it or if it allows us to exercise our legal rights or take action regarding potentially illegal activities, or to protect the safety or rights of any person or legal entity. If all or part of our company is sold, merged or otherwise transferred, we may transfer information you provide as part of that transaction and will take steps to ensure that information you provide is protected as described in this Notice.
Your participation is always voluntary. You may contact us if at any time you would like to see the personal identifying information we hold about you. You can also contact us to correct or update this information or to limit our use of your personal identifying information, or if you wish to withdraw your participation.
Please be aware that we do not respond to Do Not Track signals on our Sites.
This Notice does not address, and we are not responsible for, the privacy, information or other practices of any third parties, including any third party operating any site to which these Sites contains a link. The inclusion of a link on the Sites does not imply endorsement of the linked site by us or by our affiliates.
We will retain information you provide for as long as needed for the purposes indicated in this Notice and in accordance with law.
